This was an interesting week to start my internship, because the majority of the company was in Arizona for a conference put on by Microchip. They’re learning about new technologies that they hope to incorporate into new products in the upcoming months. This is important, because their biggest trade show, Lighting Dimensions International [LDI], is two months away, and they’re working on a few ideas.
Sadly I didn’t get to go. I was part of the skeleton crew that was left behind to “keep the light on” at the shop (answer phones, and process orders).
Because there were so few people in the shop, I was all over the place, helping everywhere. I spent a lot of time on the assembly bench, re-learning how to solder [from when I did when I was younger], reading schematics, and assembling parts so they could be inserted into the circuit boards.
I sort of felt like I was in the way, but everyone there was really nice and supportive. The main in-house assembler even went out of his way to show me a few of his tips and tricks for soldering, and explained why you shouldn’t heat the traces on the boards for too long.
I’m still not as fast as him, but I got much better at it, and after he tested my connections most of them worked well.
